Description

A stunning 18th century oil on canvas painting, Italian School, after the work of Antonio Verrio (1636–1707).

Antonio Verrio’s work ‘Jesus Healing the Sick’ exemplifies his Baroque style with its dramatic composition and vivid emotional intensity. The painting depicts a central figure of Christ, radiating divine compassion, as he heals the sick and afflicted, surrounded by a crowd of figures in varying states of distress and gratitude. The dynamic arrangement of the figures and the use of light create a sense of movement and spiritual significance, drawing the viewer’s attention to the miracle taking place. This work reflects Verrio’s ability to convey religious themes with grandeur, while maintaining the emotional depth characteristic of Baroque religious art

Antonio Verrio (1636–1707)

Antonio Verrio (1636–1707) was an Italian Baroque painter renowned for his elaborate ceiling and wall frescoes, particularly in England. Moving to England in the early 1670s, he gained royal patronage under King Charles II and became known for his dramatic, large-scale works in royal residences like Windsor Castle and Hampton Court Palace. His style was marked by vivid colors and theatrical compositions, often featuring classical and allegorical themes. Though his popularity briefly declined after the Glorious Revolution, he continued to receive commissions, working until his death in 1707, leaving a lasting impact on English Baroque art.

‘School’

Terms like “French school,” “Dutch school,” and “Italian school” are often used to describe particular styles of painting.

In its narrowest sense, “school” refers to a group of painters influenced by a specific artist. A prime example is the “School of Leonardo da Vinci,” where many artists worked in Leonardo’s studio or were influenced by him. This group is also known as “The Leonardeschi.”

In a broader sense, “school” can refer to the collective style of painters from an entire country, such as the “Italian school” or “French school.” Additionally, it can denote a specific region within a country. For example, the “Venetian school” refers to painters influenced by the local style and techniques of Venice. Notable artists of the Venetian school include Lazzaro Bastiani (1430-1512), Giovanni Bellini (1430-1516), and Giulio Campi (1500-1572).

Understanding these terms helps appreciate the diversity and depth within the art world, acknowledging both the authenticity of copies and the regional influences on artistic styles.
