‘School’

Terms like “French school,” “Dutch school,” and “Italian school” are often used to describe particular styles of painting.

In its narrowest sense, “school” refers to a group of painters influenced by a specific artist. A prime example is the “School of Leonardo da Vinci,” where many artists worked in Leonardo’s studio or were influenced by him. This group is also known as “The Leonardeschi.”

In a broader sense, “school” can refer to the collective style of painters from an entire country, such as the “Italian school” or “French school.” Additionally, it can denote a specific region within a country. For example, the “Venetian school” refers to painters influenced by the local style and techniques of Venice. Notable artists of the Venetian school include Lazzaro Bastiani (1430-1512), Giovanni Bellini (1430-1516), and Giulio Campi (1500-1572).

Understanding these terms helps appreciate the diversity and depth within the art world, acknowledging both the authenticity of copies and the regional influences on artistic styles.
